When Burns Express Freight first took to the road in 1993, they had just one van providing a same day delivery service to a single industry sector. They also had truckloads of enthusiasm, matched with industry knowledge and a desire to develop a logistics business built solidly on professionalism and customer care.

From their very first week of trading when they concentrated purely on the air freight industry, Burns have listened to their customers and responded accordingly – from buying their first small depot, to setting up a groupage service to Ireland, joining a UK pallet network, expanding into Europe, setting up a warehousing facility and most recently joining the Hazchem network.

Today, with an extensive fleet of vehicles and team of Traffic Planners, Burns Express provides a complete logistics service to customers across a wide range of sectors throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Challenge

“Due to the growth of our business we could no longer continue with the Transport Management Software program we were using” says Carolyn Burns, Managing Director of Burns Express.

Burns were looking for a more in-depth and user-friendly solution for its staff with the ability to provide multiple manifests, cost allocation and full traceability of vehicles and drivers on jobs.

Solution

“Vigo had the “personal” touch and best mirrored our own company approach to business” explained Carolyn “We were using Vigo for the Pallet-Track network and decided that we would like to use one system for all of our jobs” she added.

Burns experienced some challenges with parts of the TMS and the additional reporting that they requested, but Vigo worked with them to find a resolution which wasn’t a “one size fits all” solution. “Vigo worked closely with us to get as close as possible to what we required” says Carolyn.

Results

“As a result, we now have a more efficient TMS that integrates with our Pallet-Network system. The allocation of vehicles and drivers is much easier, and the online portal gives our customers full flexibility to enter jobs themselves along with traceability.

“We are able to provide total integration via the implant system to our customers systems which no doubt has helped us to secure contract”.
