It may seem as though pallet networks have been part of the logistics scene for a long time, but in fact it’s less than two decades since Palletline, the pioneers of the sector, shipped their first 51 pallets back in February 1992.
Today, Palletline regularly moves over 10,000 pallets around the country each and every night - but dramatic growth in volume isn’t the only advance made by this dynamic and forward-thinking organisation.
No other network has moved as fast as Palletline to optimise services and opportunities for customers nationwide, developing new services and enhancing existing offerings. Astonishingly, Palletline now provides a technology solution which is more advanced than many of the leading European 3PLs, providing total freight transparency from collection through to delivery.
So how is Palletline different?
Equipped with entirely new and market leading technology, the Palletline service has taken on the value and scope of a 3PL solution, offering a realistic alternative across the supply chain.
In short, the technologically enhanced network can provide a comprehensive range of services from warehousing to distribution, yet on a far more economical basis. What’s more, these services are available on an ‘as required’ basis, stripping cost out of the equation.
And how are end users benefiting?
Palletline’s groundbreaking technological developments have impacted across the business, increasing efficiency, further enhancing quality control systems and opening the door to a range of new services offering added value for customers.
Key innovations included the introduction of combined scanning and image capture equipment, injecting added efficiency into the process by speeding up quality control procedures and increasing freight visibility as well as contributing towards automating the claims procedure.
Benefits to customers are immense, with visual evidence of any freight presentation or delivery issues immediately available, helping to determine liability and minimise claims costs.
In addition, Palletline successfully implemented digital signature capture across the system. Deliveries in the UK are now achieved using totally automated procedures accepted across the Palletline network, via a robust and reliable solution which is already yielding defined commercial benefits including stripping out hidden costs and giving access to more accurate information.
Providing reliable distribution solutions for all areas of the food and drink industry - from products as fragile as eggs through to real ales and fine wines - Palletline offers better, smarter solutions. These advances are already encouraging customers to attach far greater value to working with Palletline and its Member Companies, successfully driving down cost throughout the supply chain.

The Pallet-Track network has introduced a state-of-the-art paperless proof of delivery solution. The single, hand-held Pidion BM-150R device is tough, lightweight and comes with 1.3 megapixel camera and touch screen technology.
The system, which provides members with an eco-friendly, low cost, paperless process is currently being tested by a number of depots.
It will be rolled out across the network during the next few months, with the aim to have all members fully active by December.
In August, the network installed the new Pallet-Track Web System, which included a host of changes. The most welcome change is the creation of the Customer Pallet Volumes, for the first time reports can now be generated for a date range, using a specific customer account code.
This report provides daily volumes, on a specific date, a week or a month. The information can be broken down by pallet type, service, weight and surcharges, providing a snapshot of a single customer or all customers by depot.
Also, in the PoD Reports option, an EPoD League Table has been written in readiness for the Electronic Data Capture software.
Pallet-Track has also added to its track and trace facility, now extended, it has the capability of scanning at customers’ premises.
From the start of October 2008, member depots that have customers operating the Online Job Entry System are able to extend its functionality to scanning out of customer premises.
The software, which is designed for larger customers’ trailer accounts, supports both WIFI and standard scanner technology.
Vigo Software provides Pallet-Track with their bespoke Hub Software, all individual Depot Systems and have supplied the Signature Capture software and devices.

John Hacklings success with Vigo Software’s Digital Signature Capture
John Hackling (Transport) Ltd is a privately owned business established in 1969, offering modern warehousing facilities and
an extensive fleet of vehicles. Hackling Transport is a founder member the revolutionary dedicated pallet delivery service ‘Palletline’,
a national distribution network giving access to 70 member companies and a fleet in excess of 5,500 vehicles.
Hacklings has been a valued customer of Vigo Software since 2001 utilising Vigo TMS Haulage, Online Job Entry, Bay Manager,
POD Scanning and integrated Vehicle Tracking solutions. In June 2008 this was complimented when they introduced Vigo’s innovative
Digital Signature Capture (DSC); the solution written by Vigo for the Palletline Network.
Hacklings report; ‘Our software provider Vigo ensured that the move to DSC was seamless, an informative and practical training
package was delivered ensuring that we were always confident of the technology as well as complete back up’
In today’s highly competitive Haulage market, differentiation of service is essential to stay ahead in the industry which is
where DSC comes into force offering a USP and a leading edge. This is a real time web-based system allowing consignments to
be traced, tracking right through the supply chain to the point of delivery.
Jobs are shown in their planned order. Simple buttons are finger depressed by the driver to indicate that they have arrived,
completed the job and departed. Functionality is available to photograph and/or scan the barcode at point of delivery to ensure
that the right load has been delivered.
Direct capture of signatures is supported, with all information being transmitted back to the main system immediately,
or if there is no GPRS signal, as soon as the equipment comes back into range. POD Signatures are available on a Vigo supplied
website almost immediately.
Hacklings, chose the new Ikôn rugged PDA (personal digital assistant) from Psion Teklogix as recommended by Vigo. This device has a
compact and powerful design with robust built-in functionality delivering increased productivity and efficiency by enabling a host
of advanced mobile applications to be carried out from a single unit along with a 5000mAh (13 hour) battery.
“We chose the Ikôn because we wanted a device that would see us through the next stage of our development, we were not looking for a
quick fix just for today. With a clear vision of our future needs, we are happy that the Ikôn will provide a robust and cost effective
solution for the needs our customers and ourselves. In short a robust, cost effective user friendly device with future proof technology”
says Mark Jones, Palletline Manager of Hackling Transport.
“We now see real cost savings and improved efficiency and real time POD information gives the customer what they have always
expected but never actually received. We can give our customers the information they need without the time consuming chain of telephone
calls previously required. We are now seeing major reductions in paper usage and telephone calls resulting in overall time and cost
savings” he added.
Amongst the benefits offered by this new solution is enhanced customer service, improved communications, increased efficiency and
customisation of service “It enables us to give our customers accurate and reliable information. A customer does not have to wait on hold
while we ‘ phone the driver’; a simple look at the screen gives instant access to the information” comments Mark.
Keith Taylor, managing director of Vigo Software, adds “Vigo software enables the final link in track and trace to be completed providing
a true end-to end-solution changing this offering from vehicle tracking to actual job tracking. In the battle for survival in such a
competitive market where profit can sometimes be dependant on cost savings, it will be the companies that embrace new technology to
link all of their systems who will ultimately succeed”.
“A major change in our operation has been implemented and left us wondering ‘how we ever managed without it’. Drivers, Customers and
Traffic office have embraced the technology and are amazed by its ease of use. For me it is the most exciting sales tool I have been
given in years!” concludes Mark Jones.
